NewsOrleans Star Reporter "Breaking Ground on new Habitat for Humanity Project"November 18 - Orleans Star reporter Laura Cummings volunteered on the build November 11th as part of a Transcontinental Media team building day. Read her account of a day on the build: http://www.eastottawa.ca/article-i271340-Breaking-ground-on-new-Habitat-for-Humanity-project.html Opening doors to a brighter futureNovember 14 - Habitat Canada has submitted information to the Globe and Mail's National Philanthropy Supplement that goes something like this:
Organizations in the housing sector, like Habitat for Humanity Canada, are attracting donors who recognize that a simple investment in a house can be leveraged to benefit families and communities for years to come. “Here is a tangible way that we can have a profound impact” said Habitat donor Linda Belanger, of Genworth Financial Canada. “Our employees work on the build-site knowing that the house they are building today will change the life of a family forever. To see the outcome of your investment, and know that it will endure, is extremely gratifying.” Habitat, the non-profit homebuilder, is focused on affordable homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty permanently, and contribute to a stronger, healthier society. “The research is clear” said David Hughes, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity Canada. “Decent housing positively impacts a person’s health, education and future prospects. The return on investment is a population that is healthier, financially independent, and better equipped to learn, to work, and to care for others.” The opportunity to be part of funding a healthier future is a key motive for Habitat’s donors. “I was deeply impacted by the implications of having a home,” said first-time donor Alma Funk from Red Deer, Alberta. “A home is shelter, security, safety, a sense of identity…everything necessary for good health and well-being.” The entire National Philanthropy Supplement will be available in the Globe and Mail on Friday, November 14th. Habitat Canada and Tomboy Tools announce partnershipNovember 11 - We are pleased to announce a national partnership, between Habitat for Humanity Canada and Tomboy Tools (Canada). Tomboy Tools has committed to supporting homebuilding across Canada with a donation of both cash, product and volunteer time. Tomboy Tools is a tool and home improvement company for women, providing a unique range of private-labeled hand tools for home improvement projects. Their primary business is to provide the highest quality of tools and techniques to women, empowering them to become confident and competent homeowners through their In-Home Workshops – Tool Parties! A unique twist on an old idea, tool parties allow women to try out new tools and see basic home improvement repair in action. Lead by a Tomboy Tools Consultant women are able to learn simple techniques and solutions while gaining self confidence to tackle a home repair project on their own. Habitat NCR supporters may already be familiar with Tomboy Tools because of the great all-in-one toolkits/step stools/hand tools kit that we raffled off at various trade shows over the past year. Together, Canadians helped to raise over $230,000 to be donated to Habitat for Humanity Canada for home build projects across the country. As part of the Buy a House, Build a Home Campaign, The Home Depot challenged Canadians to get involved by offering to donate a special home build grant to the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the community that raised the most throughout the campaign. This year, the winning community is Carleton Place! The Home Depot Canada presented a cheque for $25,000 to Habitat NCR at a presentation ceremony today. “The Home Depot has been an incredible partner in the Ottawa area, and we are thrilled and very proud that Carleton Place sold the most paper houses in Canada especially because it’s a brand new store,” says Donna Hicks, CEO of Habitat for Humanity NCR. “It’s unbelievable! Not only did Carleton Place outdo itself, but a cashier at The Home Depot in Orleans is on record for selling the most paper houses in Canada.
